Taurolidine line locks
Both ESPEN (European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism), and BIFA (British Intestinal Failure Alliance) recommend the use of taurolidine line locks:
ESPEN published guidelines on home parenteral nutrition in 2020.(1) Taurolidine locking is recommended as an additional strategy to prevent catheter related blood stream infections (CRBSIs) due to its favourable adverse event and cost profile.
BIFA also published guidelines in 2019 for the management of catheter related bloodstream infections.(2) These guidelines recommend consideration of the use of a prophylactic antimicrobial lock (e.g. taurolidine) for recurrent CRBSIs.
Calea are the UK distributor for TauroSept. TauroSept is a class III medical device containing taurolidine 2% solution.(3)
