About Home Parenteral Support

Home Parenteral Support (HPS) is used to describe the treatment that is provided to people who need to have their nutritional, or fluid and electrolyte requirements, met through one of their veins, and it's considered appropriate to do this in the patient's own home. A HPS service is needed if the intestines, for various reasons, don't work enough (known as 'intestinal failure') for a person to get their nutrition through eating and drinking alone. For some people HPS is needed for a short period (e.g. a few months), whereas other people may need it throughout their lives. Sometimes people will need HPS to help boost their strength before they go into hospital for an operation.

Types of HPS

HPS typically refers to treatment at home with parenteral nutrition (home parenteral nutrition, HPN) and/or intravenous fluids, and all the associated services that are in place to make it happen. HPN differs from intravenous fluids in the components ('ingredients') that are given through a vein. HPN typically has a higher energy and protein content that aims to prevent or treat undernutrition, whereas intravenous fluids are provided to prevent or treat dehydration and electrolyte imbalances.

What's involved with HPS?

Caring for people who need HPS can involve lots of specialist teams of people. First, the NHS hospital team will decide what type of nutrition or fluid is needed before a patient goes home, and they'll also want to schedule regular appointments to check your health and make sure the HPS is working as it should.

The GP, or other local healthcare professionals may also get involved to check everything is going well, or to answer questions. For the most part however, it will be Calea with whom the most frequent contact is with, as Calea will have overall responsibility for providing the HPS service.
